HAGIYAKI (Pottery)
Hagi-yaki (Hagi ware) is one of the oldest pottery in Japan with a long tradition distinguished for its natural beauty. It is also recognised as one of Japan’s so called ‘three bigs’ of tea ceremics sought after for the use in the tea ceremony. Its origins date back to the early 17th century in Hagi, where it developed and established its unique artistic expression and technique. Hagi-yaki is considered an art form where the nature and human creativity merge. It has a significant presence in the world of chanoyu (tea ceremony), always being cherished by tea practitioners and connoisseurs. Here, beautifully crafted ceramics produced by dedicated artisans embellish the space.Enjoy a special moment of harmony between yourself and the touch of nature through the art of pottery.
Senryūzan, the Hagi-yaki kiln founded in 1826 in the late Edo period, is a renowned kiln in Hagi. In honor of traditional spirit and culture in Hagi, it continues to produce highly artistic ceramics while keeping the essence of ‘true Hagi-yaki’. It is also a cultural location to house both ‘kiln’ and ‘museum’, allowing visitors to appreciate historically significant masterpieces.At Senryūzan, beginners are also welcome to enjoy a hands-on pottery experience in a most accessible manner.
The Hagiyaki experience is a full-fledged pottery experience using an electric potter’s wheel. There is a deep fascination in the process of touching natural soil and forming shapes with your bare hands. You can experience the cultural background and techniques of this traditional pottery and create your own Hagiyaki work. Each person can make up to 2 items.
The work will undergo post-processing by craftsmen and will be mailed at a later date.
